Yuki Poudyal ’09, of Kathmandu, Nepal, was attracted to a school far from home by “the low student/faculty ratio and generous financial aid,” she says. 

Now that she’s made St. Lawrence her college home, Yuki participates in several extracurricular activities on campus.  “I consider myself an active member of the SLU community and find all the activities I’m involved with meaningful,” she says.  “I am a member of Amnesty International and OXFAM; we come together to raise awareness about global issues and injustices, which I feel very passionately about.  I’m also involved with the Gospel Choir, where I see people constantly coming together to celebrate faith and love for God; this keeps my spirits up.” 

When asked what the best academic part of her St. Lawrence experience has been, Yuki struggles to decide.  “I’ve enjoyed my classes and I feel like my horizon has expanded getting to know all the wonderful professors,” she says.  “But I must say my summer University Fellowship was one of my best experiences so far.” She is researching “Trafficking of Nepali Women in Indian Brothels: An Analysis and a Quest for Solution” with Valerie Lehr of gender studies as her faculty partner.  “But that might be topped by my study abroad experience in Denmark this fall semester,” she quickly adds 

After graduation, Yuki plans to get her master’s degree in sociology. She is a sociology and psychology double major at St. Lawrence.
