Remarks at Johnson Hall of Science Dedication Ceremony
October 20, 2007
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. My initial impression
of the Johnson Hall of Science was a composite of computerized artist renditions,
building plans and, what I would classify at that time, wishful thinking. Some
of these fantasies circulating amongst us excited science majors included:
there was going to be a separate Majors room for us (finally, after fighting
for those computers in the math majors room) and the research labs were going
to be separate from the teaching labs. So when it was time to move into the
building after all the frantic lab packup this summer, and once all the dust
had settled, I was pleasantly surprised how many of my wishes came true!
The
spacious and well-equipped research labs were truly inviting and a pleasure
to work in this summer. There was ample space for me to set up my experiments
without getting in anybody’s way. My lab mates and I were working on
different projects, but working in a research lab together made us bond as
a research team. We were able to share ideas and help each other with our projects,
and this type of support was crucial in times when I felt overwhelmed by the
scope of my work. Having my mentor’s office right next to the lab was
extremely helpful, because I was always able to update them about my progress
and seek their guidance and assistance when required. The state-of-the-art
facilities such as the greenhouse (where I grew my plants) and the new equipment
really helped me refine, expedite and actualize my research goals. And all
the natural light in the building thanks to the glass facades and massive windows
allowed us research students to enjoy the gorgeous summer view in the comfort
of our air-conditioned labs. The tasteful architecture and the surrounding
greenery really augment the aesthetic appeal of this facility. And I really
appreciate the break-out spaces and majors’ room, where I can draw my
molecules and do my calculations without receiving weird looks from my non-scientific
peers in the Student Center.
My wonderful
research experience this summer in this great facility made me look forward to
my Senior year research experience, and I am sure it has done the same for all
my compatriots. I am extremely grateful for being given the opportunity to help
set up labs and work in the Johnson Hall of Science, I could not have asked for
a better graduation present.
