The Science Project
Phase I: Johnson Hall of Science, Phase II: Bewkes Hall

St. Lawrence's largest construction project ever, the Johnson Hall of Science, features two interconnected buildings of three floors each, plus a partially earth-sheltered lower level. The project is connected to the existing Bewkes Hall of Science via three glass walkways.

Johnson Hall of Science Details

The 130,000-square-foot project includes modern, spacious state-of-the-art facilities:
  • Teaching labs
  • Research labs
  • Conference rooms
  • Departmental and individual faculty offices
  • Informal student spaces
Specific spaces include:
  • An ethnobotany teaching lab
  • A microscopy imagery center
  • A greenhouse
  • A vivarium
  • A bioinformatics classroom
  • A Center of Chemical and Molecular Biology
  • A Center for Animal Behavior Study
  • The Richard '64 and Gail Stradling Organic Chemistry Suite, which incorporates an organic teaching lab with hood space for all students, an instrument and NMR facility and a seminar room.

The project benefits several of St. Lawrence's science departments, as well as two new and popular interdisciplinary majors, biochemistry and neuroscience. Three departments share space in the new building:
  • Biology, allowing every student the chance to engage in student-faculty collaborative research.
  • Chemistry, providing safe and inviting laboratory environs for investigative learning.
  • Psychology, providing integrated classrooms and labs more conducive to hands-on learning.

Phase I permits much-needed expansion into the vacated space and modernization by several other departments:
  • Geology, to make possible clustered faculty/student research space and a GIS lab.
  • Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics, to allow it to better serve students not just in that department but throughout the curriculum.
  • Physics, to support more research-based teaching and learning.
