Doing research with students is particularly rewarding to Associate
Professor of Physics Catherine
Jahncke. Bringing to St. Lawrence a knowledge base combining
both engineering and physics, Jahncke is also the 3+2
Engineering Program liaison, coordinating with seven other
institutions. "The line between material science engineering
(MSE), electrical engineering (EE) and solid-state physics can be
blurry," she says. "In graduate school, I took courses
in EE and MSE from faculty members who had their doctorates in physics."
Jahncke
has been involved in several grant-funded projects while at St. Lawrence,
elected to the leadership honorary ODK,
named to the Academic Honor Council and appointed faculty advisor for the Society
of Physics Students. "I really enjoy teaching, especially in the
laboratory setting, and I also enjoy working on research, both with students
and by myself," she says. "St. Lawrence offers wonderful opportunities
for the faculty to develop new teaching strategies and new courses. Doing
research with students is particularly rewarding to me."
In her spare time, Jahncke enjoys playing broomball with the physics
intramural team. She also plays bass in a "bluegrass/newgrass" band
called Grasse Roots.
