Shawn Golley and St. Lawrence “computed” from
the start. Although his life revolves around computers, Golley of
Hamilton, NY, and Hamilton Central School, became acquainted with
St. Lawrence in high school through its Young Writers Conference,
where he won a poetry slam. “The friendly nature of
everyone I met during the admissions process,” he
says, sold him on enrolling.
A physics and computer science double major,
Golley says one of his most rewarding experiences at St. Lawrence
has been as a teaching
assistant (TA) for the course Techniques of Computer Science. “I've
discovered that helping others work through problems is very
rewarding,” he says.
Golley has also been involved in the creation of a new theme house,
The Hub. “The process of creating a community centered around
something I dearly love, computers, has been especially meaningful,” he
says. “Members’ majors range from performance and communication
arts to psychology, all with the common goal of learning
more about computers and sharing that knowledge” with other students,
he and his co-founder wrote in the student newspaper, The Hill
News.
Golley says the best part of his time at St. Lawrence has been the relationships
he has established with faculty in his majors. “Talking
with them “has allowed me to expand my knowledge and make connections among
my areas of interest,” he says, as well as spurring his interest in a career
in teaching.
