Lauren Brozowski ’11 credits her presentation skills to the education she received at St. Lawrence. She says that being able to give presentations has helped her in her graduate school applications and at a statistics research conference in Miami last summer. The mathematics major presented alongside statistics professor Michael Schuckers on their findings regarding penalty rates in the National Hockey League (NHL).
During her Senior Year Experience (SYE) at SLU, Lauren says she analyzed various factors that affect penalty rates in the NHL, such as biased officials, period, score differential and whether or not a team was playing home or away. She says, “We found a way to prove that the score differential and the period were the only significant factors in predicting whether there would be an increase or decrease in penalties.”
Lauren, a member of the women’s hockey team, says her favorite SLU activity was playing in home games because of the enormous fan turnout. “I also learned how to manage my time and multi-task from playing hockey, which is something employers like to hear,” she says.
The Concord, MA, native and graduate of Lawrence Academy says she transferred to SLU for her sophomore year because of the size and location of the school.
At SLU, Lauren was copy editor for the student-run newspaper and a member of the math honorary society. She seeks a career in which she can use her presentation skills.
