Candidate for Promotion: Duncan Melville, associate professor of mathematics, is being considered for promotion to professor by the Professional Standards Committee. Letters from faculty and staff familiar with the work of Prof. Melville are vital in the review process. Especially helpful are letters that speak to the quality of his teaching, scholarship and service. For a complete description of the criteria for promotion in rank, please consult Section III E (pages 65-66) of the Faculty Handbook of St. Lawrence University on the Academic Affairs Web page of the St. Lawrence University Web site: http://web.stlawu.edu/acadaffairs/handbook.pdf. Letters should be sent to Dean Grant H. Cornwell, Vilas 103, by February 23, 2004. Prof. Melville's curriculum vitae is available at the ODY reserve desk and in the dean's office in Vilas Hall. Letters are used solely for the promotion process; confidentiality will be protected to the extent possible under the law.

Institutional Review Board Meetings: The Institutional Review Board reviews all research with human participants. Proposals are due one week prior to the meeting at which they will be reviewed. Meetings this semester are scheduled for February 11 and 25; March 10 and 24; and April 7, 21 and 28. Professional Semester Applications: Applications for the fall 2004 Professional Semester (student teaching) are due by March 1, 2004, and must be accompanied by an up-to-date transcript and letter of recommendation from a field supervisor. Application forms may be picked up in the education department office in Atwood Hall. Seniors interested in student teaching in the fall as graduate students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program must also apply. Passport Photos: Students and faculty who need passport-sized photos for passports, visas and study abroad programs may have them taken by Carol Barclay, photographer, at 64 1/2 Miner Street, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-
4 p.m. Other times are available by appointment (379-9538). Cost is $10 for 4 photos, $16 for 10 photos, $25 for 20 photos.

Outdoor Program: Introduction to Kayaking/Roll clinics are being offered in the Augsbury pool on several Sundays at 4:45 p.m. Introduction to Telemark Skiing clinics take place at Whiteface Mountain on several weekends. Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Dates for the spring semester are March 3, April 7 and May 5. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781.

Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge for lunch. Dates for the spring semester are February 10, March 9, April 13 and May 11. At the February 10 meeting, Sally Vrooman will speak about the Liberty Partnership Program, in which she is involved. Achievements
Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Michael E. Schuckers has been awarded an additional grant of $55,000 for the next phase of a biometric statistical research project from the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR). The organization awarded Schuckers a grant, also for $55,000, for the initial phase in 2003.

Kathryn M. Adams '04, of Ilion, N.Y., and Assistant Professor of Psychology Peter Cain have won a national competition for undergraduate Merck/AAAS Scholars, and as a result, will present their research at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Seattle, February 12-16. Their topic is "The Effects of Fluorocitrate Activity and Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonism on Spatial Learning in Rats."

John B. Linsley '04, of Topsfield, Mass., will present research at the 8th Annual African Language Teachers Association Conference, April 29-May 1 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Linsley completed an independent study project in Kiswahili in the fall with Visiting International Lecturer Mahiri Mwita, modern languages and literatures. He will present his paper, "Kiswahili: Global Prospects and the Impact of its Application as an Area of Academic Study in American Universities and Study Abroad Programs," at the conference.
