ANNOUNCEMENTS

Update on Kenya Program: Following the bombing in Mombasa on November 28, Associate Dean for International Education Patricia Alden has been in contact frequently with the faculty of our Kenya semester, the students enrolled there and their families. Our staff in Kenya includes Acting Director Celia Nyamweru, Associate Director Wairimu Ndirangu, Assistant Director Lina Karingi and Program Secretary Annette Kioko. All of the students are very well, and none appear to us to be anxious or eager to leave their situation. They have been advised to observe the kinds of precautions that have been recommended in the Nov. 29, 2002, Public Announcement by the State Department - that is, not to frequent tourist places such as hotels and bars and to maintain a low profile. All of the students now are placed with a business or organization that has provided internships to students on our program for many semesters. Associate Dean Alden notes that "The State Department has issued a Public Announcement for Kenya. The announcement is the lowest alert-level. While it recommends vigilance, our government is not recommending against travel to, or within, Kenya. We organize our program throughout in ways that keep students away from the tourist gathering places, and over their months in Kenya, all have learned 'street smarts' and 'country smarts.' They are also, throughout the semester, under the care of local Kenyans who feel a responsibility for their welfare. Given
St. Lawrence's long-standing ties to Kenya, we feel a particularly sharp measure of grief for the Kenyans as well as others who died last Thursday." Text of this public announcement is at: http://travel.state.gov/kenya_announce.html.

Holiday Luncheons Reminder: Two special holiday luncheons are scheduled this month:

Boo-Boo Bear Project: Members of the Behind the Seams theme hall and Costume Shop student workers are making 60 teddy bears to donate to area hospitals. They seek assistance in two forms: donations of redeemable containers, the proceeds from which are the sole source of funds for the project; and help making the bears through December 16. For information: Sabrina Egeland, 5830 or segeland@stlawu.edu.

Excel Workshops: Openings still exist in the Center for Teaching and Learning/Instructional Technology workshop Excel Functions & Formulas, December 11, 9-9:45 a.m. Details and registration forms are available at http://it.stlawu.edu/training/sched.htm.
