ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dining Services Master Plan: This week, the first steps in the creation
of a Dining Services Master Plan will begin, with the help of Porter Market
Research, Management Consulting and Design. Given the changes in dining services
functions and needs over the past several years (a new Dana structure and
dramatically increased catering throughout campus), and thinking ahead to
the opening of the student services eatery in the new student center, Vice
President for Administrative Operations Tom Coakley and Director of Dining
Services Cindy Atkins have proposed this study, with an aim to improve both
customer satisfaction and cost parameters.
The study also will provide a chance to learn ideas from other institutions
that operate their own dining services, as St. Lawrence does. The Porter group
works with many other such self-operated programs.
A campus committee chaired by Kate McCaffrey and Cindy Atkins will help Porter
Market to conduct campus and peer research on customer satisfaction, operational
effectiveness and financial performance. The Porter group will compare this
information to the many college programs they have worked with across the
country. From this analysis, they will work University personnel to design
St. Lawrence's evolving operation.
Equity in Athletics Report: Title IX generally requires institutions
to offer male and female students equal opportunities to play sports and to
treat male and female athletes fairly. Annually, every coeducational college
and university that participates in any federal student financial aid program
and has intercollegiate athletics programs is required to make available information
concerning its programs under the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994.
What follows is a summary of St. Lawrence's submission:
There are 32 teams at St. Lawrence: 15 men's, 16 women's and one coed. For
these reporting purposes, all the track teams are considered one team and
the total number is 28. In 2001-02, of the 613 individuals who participated
in the intercollegiate program, 45% were women and 55% were men. This compares
to a total undergraduate enrollment in which 53% of 1,942 students were women
and 47% were men. Athletic participation on the part of women grew slightly
from 319 in 2000-01 to 338 in 2001-02.
Team expenses totaled $719,000; 44% or $316,000 was spent on women's teams
and $403,000 or 56% on men's teams. The distribution between the genders is
identical to that in 2000-01. The 2001-02 expenditures amount to an average
expenditure per participant of $978 for the men's teams and $934 for the women's
teams as compared to $984 and $955, respectively, per participant last year.
Recruiting expenses that can be specifically attributed to individual teams
amounted to $135,000. Of this, 41% was spent on recruiting for women's teams,
$11,200 (25%) more than the previous year. Recruiting for men's teams amounted
to $79,800, or 59% of the total, $6,200 (8%) more than the previous year.
Eighteen athletic scholarships (all in Division I hockey) are available to
both men and women. In 2001-02, 20 men received the equivalent value of 18
scholarships and 16 women received the equivalent value of 15 scholarships.
India Program Meeting: An information meeting on the India program is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30, at 7 p.m. in Carnegie 112. The application deadline for participation in the fall 2003 semester is December 1, 2002.

National Depression Screening Day: Members of the St. Lawrence community will have the chance to be screened for depression, manic-depression, anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on National Depression Screening Day, Wednesday, October 30, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Northstar Pub and the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Participants will be given a short assessment, which will be scored; based on the score, counseling services staff members will recommend any further steps that may need to be taken. This program will be conducted anonymously, with only the participant and the staff member knowing the results of the assessment. The goal is to educate the community about the signs of depression, manic-depression, anxiety, PTSD and suicide, and about how to get help on or off campus for oneself or one's friends.
