Computer Rollout: Information Technology was busy over the summer with Project Rollout 2003.  With help from facilities operations staff and several other departments on campus, user services replaced over 600 faculty and staff computers and over 450 computers for public use, located either in electronic classrooms or department labs.  They also relocated and reconfigured the E3600 Gateway computers (purchased last year) now located in ODY Library’s public labs and department and student workstations.  Temporarily they stored the old computers in the Augsbury Batting Cage until August 1, at which point they erased the old computers’ hard drives and organized them for a prearranged bulk sale and pickup on August 20.  All University-owned computers were replaced with Gateway E4000s or E4100s.  Also as part of Project Rollout, the campus servers received upgrades.  More information about the project is available online at http://it.stlawu.edu/rollout2003/.

Asian Studies Seminar: The Asian Studies Initiative announces a year-long faculty reading and travel seminar for 2003-2004, and invites all continuing faculty to consider participating. “Healing and wholeness in China: the human body and the Earth body” will focus on Chinese views of health and practices of healing past and present, and environmental issues including environmental history and China’s handling of some of its current health and environmental challenges. Leaders are Anne Csete, history, and David Hornung, biology. Participants are required to add new Asia-related components to existing courses or develop new courses with some Asia-related content.  Interested faculty should send a curriculum vita and letter of interest, by September 2, to the Asian Studies Initiative Steering Committee, c/o Anne Csete, History Department. For further information: acsete@stlawu.edu.

Grief Seminars Fall 2003: Faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to a series of presentations on the dynamics of grief. Daniel Hernandez will be presenting. We will meet in the UC Formal Lounge 12:00 - 1:15 pm.  You are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.  See below for the dates and topics: For questions contact Daniel at 229-5391 or email dhernandez@stlawu.edu

Complicated Mourning - Wednesday, September 17 - Bring Brown Bag Lunch
The normal grief process is naturally a complex one that is influenced by many variables.  These variables can include age, attachment, coping skills, finances, and relationship with the deceased. However, despite the different challenges that the grief experiences may present, normally within a six-to-twelve-month period positive adjustments begin to take place. When individuals fail to make expected adjustments, they may be experiencing complicated mourning. This seminar will explore the four categories of complicated mourning.

Disclosing and Sharing Emotions in Grief: Psychological Social and Health Consequences - Wednesday, October 22

Grief, Culture, and Mourning - Wednesday, November 19

Lifeguard Meeting: All students interested in lifeguarding at St. Lawrence must attend a meeting in Augsbury on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and should bring Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR certifications (valid through the fall semester) and course schedules. For information: Chris Everett, ceverett@stlawu.edu or 5788.

Lunch Bunch: Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Noble Center Formal Lounge. Dates for the fall semester are September 3, October 1, November 5 and December 3. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781.

Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the Noble Center Formal Lounge for lunch.  Dates for the fall semester are September 9, October 14, November 11 and December 9.  Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781, or Wanda Renick, 386-3474.
