Announcements

Bass Named Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs: Grant H. Cornwell, vice president of the University and dean of academic affairs, has announced the appointment of Associate Professor of English Margaret Kent Bass as the next associate dean for faculty affairs. She will serve a three-year term beginning on July 1, 2003. According to the announcement, she will "focus on helping our faculty become more diverse and our community more welcoming of diversity."

Mortensen Campus Visit: Viggo Mortensen '80, star of the current hit film The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, will make several public appearances on campus on Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1, in conjunction with a February 28-April 5 exhibition of his photographs in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery. Attendance at each event those two days requires a free ticket:
Friday, February 28: Opening reception for the exhibition "Signlanguage: Photographs by Viggo Mortensen," 7:30-8:30 p.m. and 9-10 p.m., Brush Gallery.
Saturday, March 1: Poetry reading, 2:30 p.m., Gulick Theatre; book signing, 3-7 p.m., Brush Gallery; screening of the extended version of The Lord Of The Rings, Part I: The Fellowship Of The Ring, Gulick Theatre, 7:30-11 p.m., and The Underground, 7:45-11:15 p.m., each with introductory remarks by Mortensen. In order to accommodate as many people as possible for participation in at least one event, tickets will be made available as follows:
- Any one person may request up to two tickets for one event only.
- Tickets will be available for in-person pick-up on Monday, February 17, beginning at 8 a.m., at the E.J. Noble University Center.
- Tickets will be available to St. Lawrence University students, faculty, staff and retirees, and members of the community, through 5 p.m. on Friday, February 21. After that date and time, Tickets will be available to anyone for any of the events on a first-come, first-served basis.
- At all times, those who desire tickets must go to the E.J. Noble University Center main desk in person; identification will be required. No telephone requests will be accepted. Also, please note that no waiting list will be established and tickets will not be mailed out.
In addition, a series of Mortensen's films will be shown in The Underground throughout the week preceding the opening of the exhibition; each begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free; no tickets are required for these film screenings:

Safety Committee Meeting: Meetings of the Safety Committee are open to all members of the campus community. The first few minutes of each meeting are reserved for anyone to address the committee regarding any safety issues or concerns. Next meeting is Wednesday, Feb.19, at 3 p.m. in E.J. Noble University Center 226.

First-Year Awards: Nominations are now being accepted for the Bradley R. Evers Outstanding First-Year Student Awards, to be presented at Moving-Up Day, Saturday, April 26. Nominations, including a brief statement in support of the nominee, must be turned in to Whitman 161, the First-Year Program office, or e-mailed to dbishop@stlawu.edu by 4 p.m. Friday, February 21. Senior Awards: Nominations are now being accepted for the Douglas M. Brown Senior Award, given by the Alumni Executive Council to a senior woman and man in recognition of a well-rounded academic and co-curricular experience at St. Lawrence. The award is presented at Moving-Up Day. Nomination letters should be sent to Lisa Cania, lcania@stlawu.edu, Vilas 212, by Friday, March 14.

Professional Semester Applications: Applications for the fall 2003 Professional Semester are due by March 1, 2003, and must be accompanied by an up-to-date advising transcript and letter of recommendation from a field supervisor. Application forms may be picked up in the education office in Atwood Hall. Seniors interested in student teaching in the fall as graduate students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program must also apply. Only those students seeking certification in math, science(s), English and social studies should apply for the fall Professional Semester. For information: Esther Oey, 5872.

Outdoor Program Activities: The Outdoor Program is offering beginner clinics in several outdoor skills between now and Spring Break: kayaking; telemark skiing; Nordic skiing and snowshoeing; and ice climbing. Numerous activities are also scheduled for the Munro Climbing Wall. Times and requirements vary. For information: 5016. Two Spring Break trips are planned: climbing at Smith Rock, Oregon, with a deposit due February 24 (for information, 5377) and backcountry skiing in Quebec, with a deposit due February 28 (for information, 5376).

Lunch Bunch: The Laurentian Women's Association Lunch Bunch meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge. Remaining dates for the spring semester are March 5, April 2 and May 7. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781.

Retirees Luncheons: University retirees gather on the second Tuesday of each month in the E.J. Noble University Center Formal Lounge for lunch. Dates for the spring semester are March 11, April 8 and May 13. Reservations must be made by noon the preceding day with Mickey Williams, 386-8781, or Wanda Renick, 386-3474.

Personnel Changes

Newly hired by the University are part-time lecturers Linda Dunning and Kendall Straight, education, and Paul Stevenson, environmental studies. Departed are Mackenzie Brown and Tina Bice, dining and conference services; Matt Ramsdell, facilities operations; and Barb Burcume, equity programs. Returning for the spring semester are part-time lecturers in education Mary McGee, Mary Scharf and Lauren Shuman; adjunct assistant professors Barry Jackson and Stephen Ledoux, education; and Linda Strauss, fine arts.
