Science Shop Technician (temporary)
St. Lawrence University invites applications for a temporary, part time, Science Shop Technician position in the science departments to provide technical support to maintain, troubleshoot and repair lab equipment. Expertise in basic metal-working and basic woodworking to support the science classroom and lab curriculum is required. This position maintains scientific equipment in a safe condition and proper working order and requires knowledge of metal machining and fabrication techniques, woodworking and wood construction techniques, modern materials and material properties (resins, plastics, epoxies and composite materials) and the ability to collaborate with faculty and students to design scientific apparatus to suit teaching or research needs. This position also assists with the selection of replacement parts for basic laboratory equipment and instruments and installs new parts on arrival and returns equipment to the manufacturer for service. Qualifications: HS diploma or equivalent required. Journeyman level machinist or equivalent experience and metal machining and fabrication techniques, woodworking and modern materials and material properties experience required. Clear communication skills are essential to work with all faculty, staff and students. Must have ability to work independently and possess creative problem solving skills. Willingness to learn to calibrate and maintain basic lab equipment including balances, pipettors and pH meters expected.
