Outdoor Studies/ Center for Civic Engagement
Community Coordinator

St. Lawrence University seeks a Community Coordinator to join the staff of the University’s Sustainability Semester and Center for Civic Engagement.  In both roles the Community Coordinator will assist in development of a strong living/learning community and leadership skills among students, and the development and maintenance of relationships with broader community partners.  The Community Coordinator will create and implement curriculum relating to the topics of food preservation for the Sustainability Semester and leadership and professional development for the Center for Civic Engagement.  The Community Coordinator will live at the Sustainability Semester site, and be a fully participating member of the resident community of students and staff, practicing a simple and sustainable lifestyle.  She/he will report to the Director of the Sustainability Semester and the Director of Community Based Learning Partnerships.

The Community Coordinator will have the following qualifications/attributes:

  • Excellent communication skills, ability to effectively teach leadership, community living and food preservation skills
  • Proven, quality record keeping skills; experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Demonstrated experience with home-scale food preservation
  • Ability to enforce rules and manage student conflict
  • Interest in living a simple, sustainable lifestyle in community
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience in the residential life field helpful

Approximately 60% of the duties of this position relate to the Sustainability Semester and 40% to the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE); however there is significant overlap especially with respect to work with community partners. During the spring semester when the Sustainability Semester is in session, the majority of the Community Coordinator’s time will be focused on duties relating to the Sustainability Semester. In the fall semester, when the Sustainability Semester site is being used as a student residence, there will be a greater focus on CCE duties.

Sustainability Semester
Under the Supervision of the Director of the Sustainability Semester the Community Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:

Oversight:

  • Primary supervision of students to ensure safety and compliance with program and University rules and regulations 
  • Guide students and participate in the development of community rules and responsibilities including site maintenance and chores
  • Assist students in meal planning and food purchasing for shared meals
  • Assist students in finding efficient, safe and sustainable transportation to and from campus during the fall semester
  • Assist the Homesteader-in-Residence with food preservation and storage including maintenance of records of processes and recipes used and total food quantities preserved
  • Assist the Homesteader-in-Residence with logistics and advertising of local community workshops that integrate the expertise of farmers and homesteaders
  • Participate and encourage student participation in homestead campus site development including sustainable energy and other systems
  • Mediate community living conflicts

Administration:

  • Facilitate development of a living/learning community among students thorough formal and informal community building and leadership exercises 
  • Set up and oversee food purchasing including a CSA, grocery store accounts and orders through dining services
  • Responsible for communication with staff, students and community members as appropriate
  • Assist all staff in development and maintenance of relationships with community partners
  • Assist with the interview and selection process for student applicants to the Sustainability Semester and to the fall residence house
  • Document, maintain and share excellent records of utility usage and other sustainability related systems

Teaching:

  • Teach ½ credit class surrounding the topics of food preservation/harvest each fall semester to students in residence

Center for Civic Engagement
Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Community Based Learning (CBL) Partnerships at the CCE, the Community Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:

Oversight:

  • Facilitate placement of students  with local farm community partners  and oversee and support student work with these partners  

Administration:

  • Maintain relationships with the local farms associated with CCE
  • With the Director of CBL Partnerships create, plan and implement Community Partner Development roundtable discussion and/or workshops
  • Explore/Plan for professional development opportunities for the Community Mentors (student leaders w/in CCE)

Teaching:

  • Develop and implement curriculum (reading & discussion) for the Community Mentor program that focuses on leadership and professional development
