Mellon Crossing Boundaries Project
Assistant Program Director

St. Lawrence University seeks an Assistant Program Director for Crossing Boundaries:  Re-envisioning the Humanities for the 21st Century, a project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  Reporting to the Crossing Boundaries Program Director, the Assistant Director will help lead and administer the grant, create, coordinate and direct project activities, and build and maintain a project web site.  While the position will require technical and administrative skills, the focus of the project is on humanities-based pedagogical enrichment and innovation in an undergraduate, liberal arts college environment, and we anticipate that the Program Director and Assistant Program Director will be key contributors in creatively realizing the broader programmatic and pedagogical vision of the Mellon grant.

Description

This is full-time, twelve-month administrative staff position, potentially renewable for up to four years.  The Assistant Program Director will:

  • Serve as a member of the Crossing Boundaries steering committee, which includes the departments of Art and Art History, English, Film Studies, Global Studies, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Performance and Communication Arts, and Religious Studies, as well as the Center for International and Intercultural Studies, Information Technology, the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, the St. Lawrence University Libraries, and the Newell Center for Arts Technology
  • Help facilitate the work of three project subcommittees:  (1) the digital humanities, (2) collaborative and integrative teaching, and (3) experiential and off-campus learning
  • Teach and help plan workshops, forums, and tutorials in digital technologies, and consult in classrooms where faculty or staff are incorporating digital humanities learning components
  • Meet regularly with faculty and staff members to assist with program and professional development and the enrichment of faculty/staff projects
  • Coordinate and assist with digital technology and digital technology issues
  • Create, plan and provide workshops and seminars to promote faculty, staff, and student work across disciplines, within the digital humanities, and in the humanities more broadly
  • Help coordinate events and activities, including an annual retreat for the project steering committee and interested faculty and staff
  • Compile and administer program surveys and evaluations
  • Travel as required for professional training and program activities
  • Administer the budget in collaboration with the Program Director
  • Collaborate and network with other colleges and universities in regard to their own digital humanities programs and initiatives to pool resources, ideas, and projects and make recommendations for enhancements

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in the humanities, digital humanities, or other relevant field/s required.
  • Experience and facility with digital technologies, including the use of mobile devices, social media, and open source initiatives, among others preferred.
  • Experience managing projects preferably in an undergraduate liberal arts environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds and with different levels of training.
  • Knowledge of the literature in the emerging field of digital humanities and a commitment to scholarship and teaching in the digital humanities preferred.
  • A capacity to help shape and sharpen the vision and long-term pedagogical goals of the Crossing Boundaries Humanities Project as it develops.
