University Bookstore Director

St. Lawrence University invites applications for the position of Bookstore Director.  The Director is responsible for all of the operations of the university store, which in addition to text books and educational supplies, offers a wide variety of trade books, clothing, electronics, software, sundries and gifts.  The duties include financial planning and budgeting, staffing, marketing, purchasing, pricing, selling, stocking, textbook coordination, faculty relations, cash handling, record maintenance, safety/security, and inventory control. The Director will represent the bookstore and the university at state, regional, and national association meetings.

Successful candidates will possess outstanding management skills, customer service skills, and business acumen to effect an efficient and profitable store operation.  Candidates are expected to be well versed in retail operations, have the ability to develop rapport with vendors, and all customers including faculty, staff, students and the broader community.  Proven ability in the operations of a retail store, knowledge of industry standards, innovations regarding textbooks, merchandise, public relations, and information systems are essential.  Essential skills include extensive management experience including, effective recruiting, hiring, evaluation, training and motivation programs for permanent positions and students.  Standard sales associate duties must be understood and the candidate must be flexible and willing to do any job the store operation might require. 

A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field and at least five years management/supervisory experience in a college bookstore or equivalent retail setting are required.

Desired qualifications include excellent verbal and written communication skills and "people" skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate employees toward a common goal. Knowledge of merchandising, advertising, marketing, promotion, and display. Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles to include interpreting financial statements and preparing budget statements. Knowledge of copyright and trademark laws.

Strong knowledge of and aptitude with PC, UNIX, and Mac Platforms, Excel Word, HTML, CSS, and other assorted web-oriented programs.

The position performs independently and confers with and reports to the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer.  The anticipated start date is June 17th.
