Munn Center for Rhetoric and Communication
Director

St. Lawrence University, a private institution with a deep and longstanding commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education, seeks a Director for its Munn Center for Rhetoric and Communication.  The Munn Center builds on the university’s commitment to helping students become intentional, creative, and responsible communicators by providing them with opportunities to discuss writing, oral presentations, research, and multimedia projects with peers trained in the theories and pedagogy of rhetoric and communication, as well as the practice of peer tutoring.

The Director of the Munn Center works closely with other faculty and staff in the university's Rhetoric and Communication Program to enhance the development of students' communication skills across the curriculum, across their undergraduate careers, and across the various modes of communication (i.e., oral, written, and visual).   The center's director is responsible for fostering the development of students' communication skills by:

  • consulting with individual faculty members on communication skills pedagogy and assignment design/sequencing;
  • working with specific departments and programs to devise strategies to assist them in meeting their particular communication skills learning goals;
  • periodically offering faculty development workshops open to the faculty as whole;
  • promoting the services and activities of the university's communication center to the campus community;
  • managing the communication center's budget;
  • training and supervising the peer tutors who work in the communication center, as well as the university's First-Year Program mentors;  and
  • teaching three courses per year, including one section of the course designed to train peer mentors.

This visiting faculty position, which is renewable for up to three years, requires: a terminal degree in Communication, Composition, Rhetoric, or English (ABDs will be considered); excellent organizational skills; the ability to interact and collaborate successfully with a broad range of constituencies; and a demonstrated commitment to communication skills pedagogy.

Special preference will be given to candidates with: leadership experience in a university communication center, with background and interest in assessing the development of communication skills; and with the expertise and vision needed to maximize the potential for productively using technology to advance communication skills learning goals.

Candidates should send a letter of application, vita, and three letters of reference to Kirk W. Fuoss, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Performance and Communication Arts, St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, 13617.  Screening of applications will begin on January 15, 2010.  St. Lawrence University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity employer.  Women, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
