Director of Counseling Services

St. Lawrence University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Counseling Services, effective August 1, 2013.  The Director reports to the Vice President and Dean of Student Life and is an important member of the Student Life team.  This is an eleven month position.
 
The Director of Counseling Services will provide strong and collaborative leadership in developing programs that maximize students’ choices and responsibility for their well-being.  The position requires an energetic team player who has demonstrated visionary leadership in providing creative outreach programs and services in a higher education community.  Working from a wellness model, the Director will focus on promoting programs and services that assist students in meeting both academic and personal goals.  The successful applicant must understand the fluid nature of working on a university campus—engaging college students, having a good sense of humor and recognizing the important partnership between academic and student life.

Qualifications: New York State Mental Health Counselor License (LMHC) or New York State Clinical Social Worker License (LCSW) is required; a Master’s degree in counseling is required; a doctorate in counseling or closely related field preferred.  The successful candidate will have supervisory experience with professional staff members and have a thorough understanding of the issues facing college students. Seven years of directly related experience in a university counseling setting is desirable.  Minimum of five years of related experience required.  Extensive experience in program development, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, peer education, outreach programs, alcohol and substance abuse issues is recommended.  Additionally, important qualifications are an understanding of a liberal arts residential setting, student life and a team approach to student life.
