Major Gifts: Associate Director
Function and Scope
The Associate Director of Major Gifts will join the Director, one other Associate Director, and the members of the Office of Parent Leadership Giving in implementing the senior level giving program and stewardship functions of St. Lawrence University. This individual will travel extensively to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective alumni, parents and friend donors. Primary focus will be on securing gifts of $100,000 or more, but with additional responsibilities for raising gifts of $25,000 and greater. Each Associate Director assumes prospect management responsibility for approximately 70 – 100 qualified prospects of $100,000 or more, and approximately 300 additional qualified prospects of $25,000 or more. Additional attention is also paid to approximately 400 ‘investigate’ prospects yet to be qualified.
Final assignment of regions will be determined after evaluating the successful candidate.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Maintain a caseload of prospects, including 70-100 with the capacity to make $100,000 gifts and 300 with the capacity to make $25,000 gifts, many of whom demonstrate strong inclination to support St. Lawrence.
- Complete 140 prospect visits annually, typically requiring 40-60 travel days each year.
- Identify engage and solicit of major donors to the University. Annual individual goals are established collaboratively within the Office of Major Gifts and reflect the identification of new prospects, the solicitation of gifts, commitments secured, volunteers effectively utilized and other related work. It is important to close gifts on behalf of the University.
- Recruit and engage in fund raising calls with members of the National Major Gifts Committee. It is also important to work with members of the University’s Board of Trustees, key alumni, parent and friend volunteers in procuring of major gifts.
- Solicit gifts on behalf of the St. Lawrence Fund, which includes reunion and non-reunion gifts as well as the Parents Fund.
- Contribute travel and prospect recommendations for Presidential travel designated to further the goals and objectives of the advancement division.
- Attend alumni program events where appropriate and provide support to the mission of the division and the University.
- Support initiatives sponsored by offices both within the advancement division and by those across the University. Events include reunion, commencement, Laurentians in Residence, admissions-sponsored scholar visit and campus visit days.
Specific Skills/Attributes Required:
- A bachelor’s degree (candidates with advanced degrees encouraged to apply), and at least five years of successful fundraising experience, or equivalent sales/marketing experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential in successfully fulfilling the needs of this position. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to develop strong relationships with clients/donors with the highest degree of professionalism.
- An individual who both possesses and balances well the following characteristics: assertive, creative, well-organized, self-motivated, team and goal oriented and persistent.
- A familiarity with and an appreciation for the role and mission of a small, private liberal arts institution. In addition, candidates will be expected to articulate the University’s mission and goals in a compelling and eloquent manner.
