Summer CA Information

SUMMER COMMUNITY ASSISTANT 2014

 

Description:  The Summer Community Assistant is a live-in position.  The primary responsibilities of this position, include - but are not limited to - participation in an on-call rotation, helping with openings and closings, the provision of administrative support, assisting with maintenance concerns, and providing community building opportunities to Summerterm and Research students living on campus.  This role is available to two current CAs and includes free housing for June and July.

Accessibility:  It is imperative that the Summer Community Assistant be accessible to residents, staff, and other campus departments.  Applicants for this position should expect that there will be times when immediate action by the CA is necessary.  However, given the length and nature of this position, the Summer Community Assistant is also encouraged to find an appropriate balance between accessibility and private/personal time. 

Expectations for the Summer CA include the following:

  • Administrative Assignments
    • Summer CAs will complete a Summer CA Weekly before noon each Monday.
    • Summer CAs are required to meet with the Associate Director and RC on Call each Monday at 1:00pm in the Office of Residence Life. 
    • Summer CAs are required to meet with the Associate Director, RC On Call, International Student Services and Facilities following each weekly meeting to check in on the Sykes Kitchen located in the 2600’s.  Summer CAs will be responsible for working with this group and Sykes residents to address issues that come up within the kitchen.
    • Summer CAs will also help with Residence Life Departmental Initiatives as needed including, but not limited to, the following:
      • Fall 2014 CA Training Programming and Preparations
      • Search Committees/Interviews
  • Community Development
    • Summer CAs will serve as role models and maintain a civil community.
    • Summer CAs will regularly communicate with each resident and hold weekly community builders to help create a good living community.
    • Summer CAs will work as a team to be available to summer residents and advertise local/campus events held during the summer months.
    • Summer CAs will host one Community Meeting at the start of the Summerterm/Research Period; Community Meetings should be held as needed thereafter.
  • CA Duty
    • Summer CAs will participate in a two person on-duty rotation lasting from 8:00pm-8:00am for the duration of the summerterm and while research students are on campus (6/2/14 – 7/31/14).
      • Duty includes conducting rounds in the Sykes and Townhouse living areas, overseeing kitchen areas, and maintaining quiet hours.
      • Sunday through Thursday, rounds will be completed at 8pm and 11pm.
      • On Friday and Saturday, rounds will be completed at 8pm, 11pm, and 1am.
      • At the end of evening rounds the CA on duty will complete a duty log.
    • Summer CAs will carry an on-call phone that is charged and in working order at all times.  Any issues should immediately be reported to the RC on Call.
    • Summer CAs are responsible for informing residents about residential issues, University policies, and procedures.
    • Summer CAs are responsible for documenting and reporting incidents in a timely manner.  Concerns can be recorded in the form of IRFs, Security Reports (if Safety and Security is needed) and/or a conversation with the RC on Call.  Minor concerns can be reported in the summer weekly.
  • Facilities/Housing
    • Summer CAs are responsible for participating in openings and closing for summer session and the townhouses.
      • Opening is at noon on June 2nd, 2014. 
      • Closings happen on July 3rd, 2014 and August 1st, 2014.
      • Participation in all three events is required for the Summer CA position.
    • Summer CAs are responsible for maintaining up-to-date room rosters and housing forms, and Room Condition Reports (RCRs) for residents.
    • Summer CAs are responsible for reporting maintenance concerns to Facilities using online work order system.
    • Summer CAs are responsible for assisting in fire drills and related safety checks.

And all other duties as assigned.

Compensation: Community Assistant compensation equals the cost of the summer housing rate.  CAs are given a room wavier for their compensation.

Length of employmentThe Summer CA position officially begins June 1st, 2014 and ends on August 2nd, 2014.  Summer CAs can make arrangements to arrive on Sunday, June 1st by contacting the office well in advance.  Summer CAs will need to move out of their room by August 3rd.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful applicant must have participated in at least one Fall CA training experience and be a current CA in good standing with the University.  Candidates should be responsible, enthusiastic, and motivated.
