PROJECT MENTOR RECOMMENDATION FORM (to be completed online)

The following are intended as guidelines for writing your recommendation. The more information you provide, the better the committee can evaluate the feasibility and intellectual quality of the student’s proposal.

How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
What skills and academic preparation are required from the student to ensure the successful completion of this project? Does the student possess these skills and is s/he adequately prepared to complete the project?
What additional training/skills does the student need to acquire for this project? How will s/he acquire these?
How motivated and serious is the student about his/her proposed project?
What reservations (if any) do you have about mentoring this student?

Questions about the project:

What is the feasibility of completing the proposed project during one summer? What do you see as the most likely reasons why the project might not be completed in this timeframe?
Why would this project be considered interesting and relevant to scholars in your academic field or others? What is the project’s contribution to your field or others?
How will the project benefit this student? How does this project fit into his/her career at SLU?
What was your involvement in drafting this research proposal?
What is your personal (professional) interest in this project?
What reservations (if any) do you have about mentoring this project?
What would you like to add about the project that was not outlined in the proposal?
If you have more than one student applying, how would you rank them? How does the student compare to other majors in the field (top 10%, top 25%, top 50%?)

Mentor’s role

What will be your role as a mentor in helping the student to complete this project? Typically mentors of SLU fellows spend 3-4 hours per week during the 8 to 10 week period working with the student on the project; please specify if there is any reason why you would expect your weekly time spent on this project to vary significantly from this.
