Marcus Tuttle ’10 intends that his double major in chemistry and mathematics will be the pathway to a Ph.D. program in chemistry. Marcus, who is from Gouverneur, NY, and graduated from Gouverneur High School, worked on a chemistry research project during the summer after his first year at St. Lawrence; he wanted to continue the project the following summer, and did so with a
University Fellowship. Under the guidance of professor Neil Law,
Marcus worked on synthesizing and characterizing new metallacrown compounds and the ligands used in their synthesis in an attempt to incorporated new transition metals into the traditional metellacrown structure.
“I gained valuable experience working with my peers, taking what we learned in the classroom and expanding it to new concepts and ideas,” he says.
“We were allowed to work with equipment and software other undergraduates around the country aren’t allowed to use until they enter a graduate program.”
Marcus is president of the
St. Lawrence Fencers, treasurer of the Match Club and a member of the
University Chorus. He adds, “My favorite thing about SLU life is having the
opportunity to work in a small environment where people get to know one another and their professors. It makes extra activities more fun when you see the support of everyone on campus.”
