Mallory Mumford '06 jumped right into research
as a first-year student. She’s explored a variety of opportunities
ever since. Mallory, of Lowville, New York, and a graduate of Lowville
Academy and Central School, is a government major, with a
minor in psychology. As a first-year student, she conducted
research on home-schooling, giving a campus presentation on the results. With
support from a University Fellowship in 2004, Mallory
researched "The Constitutionality of Same-Sex Marriage." A
member of the government, psychology and leadership honor societies,
she is also a Community Assistant, a mentor in the First-Year
Program, a member of SLU Buddies – a group of students
who volunteer their time with local children – and has found
the time to participate in a semester of study in Washington,
D.C., and three weeks of intensive study between semesters in
Senegal, West Africa. After graduation, she'll be teaching elementary
school in Eastern North Carolina, through the Teach for
America program. (connect to Netnews item)
"St. Lawrence has wonderful opportunities for students to conduct
their own research," Mallory says. "Through the University's
Fellowship program, I was able to spend a summer working on a research
project with two professors from my First-Year Seminar. In
addition to improving my research and writing skills, this
experience has also helped me build stronger relationship with my
faculty mentors."
