"Global search" might be the best way to describe research
undertaken by Stephen Cotton '06 (Granby Memorial),
of Granby, Connecticut. During his time at St. Lawrence, the government major
has researched the Canadian-U.S. border and studied in Denmark, Russia
and China. He won the government department's Pi Sigma Alpha Outstanding
Paper Award in 2005, the same year he was awarded a University
Fellowship to examine the topic "Civil Societies Across
Borders: The United States and Canada Compared."
A participant in the program of study in Denmark, Cotton
was awarded a grant to conduct additional research following that
semester, in Russia. And during the 2004-2005 semester break, he
was one of six students who travelled to Hong Kong and
the Pearl River Delta in China to conduct a research project, working
with Professor of Government Alan Draper. The group researched the
general topic "Change
at Warp Speed: The Political, Economic, and Environmental Transformation
of the Pearl River Delta," and each student involved also researched
specific topics of their own interest.
Cotton is also a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.
