FODYLL Pre-Commencement Lecture
May 20, 2017
1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Griffiths Art Center 123
Guest Lecture, Dr. Michael R. Greenwald, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, will present: Why do Christians Have Their Own Bible? -- followed by a brief discussion period and light refreshments.
He will discuss why Christians have always had a Scripture. For many decades it was the same as the Jewish Scriptures (Protestant Old Testament). But by the end of the second century C.E., Christians had a new collection of texts that they called the “New Testament.” Why? The original was good enough for Jesus, or to quote the old gospel song, “It was good for Paul and Silas.” What happened in those intervening 150 years that made Christians think that they needed a new set of texts so that they now have a two-part canon?
