How do I notify the University of a change of name or social security number?   back to top

You may update your identification information by completing the Change of Student Information Form. Name Changes and Social Security Number changes require one of the following documents:

  • Marriage License 
  • Official Court Document
  • Drivers License 
  • Original Social Security Number and Picture ID (for Social Security Number changes)

The Change of Student Information form may be printed from the Student Information Page and mailed or faxed to the Registrar's Office. The form may also be completed at the Registrar's Office, Vilas Hall, Room 117.

You may update your address information by using any of the following methods.

A Schedule of classes, which lists the courses being offered for a given term, may be accessed from the Registrar's Homepage.

Where can I find a description of courses offered by the University?  back to top
Course descriptions can be accessed at http://web.stlawu.edu/programs/catalog.html. Simply click on the appropriate catalog year.

What is the difference between a dual listed and cross listed course? back to top
A dual-listed course is a course in which credit can be earned in more than one department or program and each department/program has a listing for the course. For example, Environmental Chemistry is dual-listed as CHEM 106 and ENVS 106. A student may register under either listing.

A cross-listed course is a course in which credit can be earned in more than one department or program but the course has only one department/program listing. For example, Early Canada, HIST 203, is cross-listed for Canadian Studies. A student may receive credit for the Canandian Studies program but they must register under the history listing.

How can I determine if a class is closed?  back to top

You can view course availability in the APR system by viewing the Course Listings, selecting a department and looking under the "open" column. This will display the amount of open seats in the class. You can also Review the open course list.

Where do I pay for my classes? back to top

Tuition and fees can be paid online at www.stlawu.edu/business/students.html or by cash or check. Contact STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES.

When is Add/Drop? back to top

 Add/Drop is during the first seven days of classes in any Fall or Spring semester or the first three days of classes in any summer session. Students changing their schedules within the add/drop period must have written approval of the instructor of each course being added or dropped as well as the approval of their advisor.

May I register after Add/Drop? back to top

No. Students will be admitted to class after the last day of the Add/Drop periods without special permission by petitioning the academic petitions committee. Click here for an academic petition.

May I drop a class after Add/Drop?  back to top

No. You must "withdraw" from the class after Add/Drop is over by completing a Withdrawal Form. The Withdrawal Form must be completed and returned to the Registrar's Office with the appropriate signatures by the posted date (end of the tenth week of class). A student may only withdraw from two courses during their academic career.

How does withdrawing from a class affect my GPA?   back to top

Withdrawals after the Add/Drop period will result in course entries on your academic record with a grade of 'W'.

How do I obtain my St. Lawrence University transcript?  back to top 

Transcripts must be requested in writing to the Registrar's Office at least 3-5 days in advance. Requests must include student's full name, student ID, an approximation of the dates attended, a complete address (transcripts may not be faxed) where the transcript is to be sent and signature. Transcript Request forms can be printed from the student information page on the Registrar's Site or completed at the Registrar's Office, Vilas Hall, Room 117. In order to avoid any delays, please be sure to include all names you may have used while attending St. Lawrence University.

All transcripts are free of charge!

How long does it take to process my request for a transcript?  back to top

Transcripts are usually processed within three to 5 business days of receipt of the completed request. This time may vary during registration and graduation periods.

May I pick up my request personally?  back to top 

Yes. Your transcript will be available for pick up 3-5 days after you placed your request. Remember, if you open an official transcript it is no longer considered official.

How do I know if I need an official or unofficial transcript?  back to top 

Official copies are usually required for other universities, institutes, scholarship sponsors, certification, and employment. Unofficial copies are normally used for a student's personal use. Some institutions accept unofficial copies temporarily until an official copy can be sent. Check with the institution that is requiring your transcript in order to determine which transcript to request.

If I come to the Registrar's Office, may I obtain my transcript on the spot?   back to top

No. There is a three to five day processing time for transcripts. The Registrar's Office is unable to process official transcript requests on the spot. Current students may print an unofficial transcript from the APR system.

Can I have someone else pick up my transcript?  back to top 

You may have someone else pickup your request if you send written permission for that person to pick up your request. The person picking up your transcript must have proper identification.

May I request a transcript via email?   back to top

No. At this time, we are not able to accept transcript requests via email. EXCEPTION: You may email a scanned image of a request if it includes your full name, student ID, an approximation of the dates attended, a complete address or fax number where the transcript is to be sent and signature. You may also mail, fax, or complete a form at the Registrar's Office.

How can I calculate my GPA? back to top

You may download the excel GPA Calculation Form from the student information page. Input unit, grade and cumulative QPA values and the form will figure your new GPA.

Is it possible to print my transcript off APR?   back to top

Yes, you may print an unofficial transcript off APR. Please note: Only current students have access to APR.

How may I obtain proof or enrollment?  back to top 

1. Log into APR from the St. Lawrence University Registrar’s Site at www.stlawu.edu/registrar.
2. Click the APR tab at the top.
3. Click “Clearinghouse Student Self Service Site”. A new log-in window will open.
4. Verify identity using name, date of birth and social security number.
5. Select the radio button for “Current” or “All” enrollment and click “Obtain an Enrollment Certificate”.

What constitutes full-time and half-time enrollment status?   back to top

The number of credit hours required to be considered full-time for enrollment certification purposes are as follows:

  • Undergraduate: 3.5 or more units= full-time,
  • Graduate: 12 or more hours = full-time.

You may pick a Major/Advisor Change Form up at the Registrar's or Advising Office. Signatures must be obtained from the current advisor and the new advisor. Completed forms should be returned to the Advising Office in Whitman Hall.

What is the "Declaration to Graduate"? back to top

This is a form that tells the Registrar's Office that you anticipate graduation and in what term. It also ensures that the information for Commencement and on your Diploma are correct.

How do I make arrangements for graduation?  back to top

You must complete the Declaration to Graduate Form . This application can be printed off of the student information page or submitted electronically. Be sure to complete all areas of the form to ensure accuracy for the Commencement Ceremony and your diploma.

What if I will not be able to graduate during the term I applied for?   back to top

Simply fill out the Declaration to Graduate Form with your new information as described above. You should reapply as soon as you learn about your delayed graduation date.

How do I know what to do for Graduation? back to top

Throughout the semester in which you have applied for graduation, you will receive notices regarding graduation information. Most com via email and will confirm dates, times, attire, and location of graduation.

 You should work with your academic advisor throughout your career at St. Lawrence to ensure that you are on track each semester. A graduation checklist and self-audit form is also available on the student information page.

Your diploma will be mailed to you within four weeks after the end of the semester.

A Request for Replacement Diploma can be submitted by mailing or faxing a diploma request to Kevin MacKenzie (Registrar's Office). The request should include your name, date of graduation, student ID, address to mail the diploma and your SIGNATURE. There is no charge for duplicate diplomas.

Your grades are posted on your unofficial transcript, available through the APR system.

You can locate your GPA on your St. Lawrence University transcript available through the APR system. You may also come by the Registrar's office with appropriate identification. We cannot give out GPAs over the telephone.

How do I make sure my grades are mailed to my parents? back to top

The federal Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) provides that a college or university cannot release a student’s grades to parent(s) or guardian(s) without the student’s written permission. If you wish to have your grades sent to your parent(s) or guardian(s), you must complete this form. Forms submitted without a student signature will not be processed.

You only need to complete a request once, and the permission will remain in effect until you graduate or until you file a Request to Discontinue Grade Distribution form (see question/answer below).

How can I stop the mailing of my grades to my parents? back to top

If you wish to DISCONTINUE having your grades sent to your parent(s) or guardian(s), you must complete this form. Forms submitted without a student signature will not be processed.

This request will remain in effect until you graduate or until you re-file a Release for Parent Grade Distribution form.

Note: A parent or guardian may still obtain grades by providing the Registrar’s Office with a copy of their most recent income tax statement proving dependency status of the student.

What do I need to do if I want to attend a different school this term and come back to St. Lawrence University next term?  back to top

You will need to be re-admitted to St. Lawrence University. Contact the Office of Student Life. You will then need to complete the Transfer Credit Approval Form, which can be picked up from the Registrar's Office, or downloaded online. Make sure all appropriate signatures are present. You also need to have an OFFICIAL transcript sent from the school.

How do I know if a class is equivalent to one at another university?  back to top

All classes for transfer must be approved by the department chair relative to that class. The chair will decide if the class has a course equivalent at St. Lawrence.

 

ACADEMIC HONORS  back to top

What are the requirements for being named to the Dean's List?  back to top

The Dean's List comprises those students who in the preceeding semester earned a GPA of 3.6 or higher in a minimum of four courses worth at least one unit each and for which a number grade was received (no pass/fail).

What are Latin Honors? back to top

Latin honors are awarded cum laude (3.3 - 3.599); magna cum laude (3.6 - 3.849) and summa cum laude (3.85 - 4.0). Transfer students who have completed at least two full years of course work at St. Lawrence University are eligible for all Latin honors.

What is required for a student to be placed in Good Standing?  back to top

Normally, academic standing is defined as (1) earning the minimum number of course units as indicated in the Guides for Normal Academic Progress (below) and (2) maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
