John Newman, NYSCTC Coach of the Year in 2002 and league Coach of the Year

and a four-year runner for the Saints in cross country and indoor and outdoor
track. As assistant coach and then head coach beginning in 2001, his
teams have won 11 straight conference men's titles and four of the last eight
NYSCTC cross country championships. The Saints also won the NCAA Regional
championship in 1997 and 2000. He is also high jump coach and middle and

“I believe that athletics plays an integral role in a small liberal
arts college setting. Athletics provide a valuable dimension in which personal,
mental, social and physical growth can be enriched through individual and
team goal-setting, success and even lack of success. My role is to motivate
and educate each of my athletes as they strive
to achieve their personal and team goals. I also strive to be a sound role
model for my athletes, whether in academics, athletics, family life or citizenship.
St. Lawrence runners receive an exceptional liberal arts education in a beautiful
campus setting with first-class facilities, and have the opportunity to compete
against some of the best competition in Division III, and sometimes Division
I.”
