Program History and League Information
A regional power in the 1970s
and 1980s, St. Lawrence University’s
football program has re-established itself as a Liberty League contender
under the direction of Head Coach Chris Phelps. Phelps, a former Saint
quarterback, and his young staff have three solid recruiting seasons
under their belts and are looking forward to continued success in the
seasons to come. The Saints play on one of the finest small-college
football facilities in the Northeast in Weeks Field/Leckonby Stadium
and also make full use of a new fitness and weight training facility
in Newell Field House.
The Saints compete in the Liberty League, which has expanded its membership
to qualify its champion for an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
St. Lawrence joins Hobart, Rochester, Union and Rensselaer as charter
members of the Liberty League in football; the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy,
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy joined
as football-only members for the 2004 inaugural season of official league
competition. Following the team’s best season since 1991, freshman
tight end Brett Young was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year, eight
other Saints received all-league honors, and nine Saints were named to
the Liberty League All-Academic Team.
