Daniel F. Sullivan served as the 17th
president of St. Lawrence University from 1996 until his retirement on June 30, 2009.
A 1965 mathematics graduate of St. Lawrence, Dr. Sullivan
received the Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University where he was
an Edward John Noble Fellow and a National Science Foundation Graduate
Fellow. His research and scholarship have been focused in science and
mathematics education, the sociology of science and medicine, and the
sociology of organizations.
During his tenure, St. Lawrence University experienced a renaissance characterized by support for excellence across the curriculum, a commitment to the quality and increased size of the faculty, a focus on well-balanced, student-centered campus life and an historic investment in renovated and new facilities. President Sullivan's goal was constant: to improve those programs that relate most directly to the education of its students.
Since 1996, the University enriched the academic experience with 11 new majors and 24 new faculty positions, expanded student-faculty research, and added five new international programs. It invested over $200 million in new or renovated facilities to support student achievement. It completed one comprehensive campaign, raising $132.2 million, exceeding goal; and launched Momentum St. Lawrence, which will raise $200 million by December 31, 2010.
President Sullivan retired June 30, 2009 as President Emeritus of St. Lawrence University, an honor conferred by the Board of Trustees at its meeting on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Their resolution concluded: "Therefore, the Board of Trustees, on behalf of every Laurentian, makes its formal gratitude and respect known by this declaration that Daniel F. Sullivan shall hereby be named President Emeritus of St. Lawrence University." Other honors included naming rhe Student Center for Dan and Ann Sullivan, establishing a faculty-student research endowment in their names, and creating an overarching name for a collection of funds that support student-faculty research and creative work in the arts.
