In Memoriam: Sabra Bartlett ’74
It is my very sad duty to share with
you that Trustee Sabra Bartlett ’74 passed away yesterday, October
31, after a long illness. Sabra was an amazingly talented, gracious,
intelligent and devoted alumna who brought so much to her St. Lawrence
trusteeship, though she had only begun her second term very recently.
President of Shearwater Associates, LLC,
an independent sales and marketing firm for investment managers, Sabra
also co-owned, with her husband Claus Wolter, SeaPony Tours and Charters,
a boat charter and tour business in New London, CT, where she lived.
St. Lawrence was a truly central part of Sabra’s life. She had
a full and rich experience as an undergraduate that included membership
in the Laurentian Singers, in Omicron Delta Kappa, and in Alpha Delta
Pi sorority. She spent her junior year in France and had a lifelong
interest in international relations. As a North Country native, growing
up in Ogdensburg, NY, Sabra also had a special place in her heart
for North Country students.
After graduation, Sabra volunteered for
her alma mater in such areas as career advising, fundraising, reunion
planning and, since 1997, as a trustee. She served a term as vice
chair of the Board, and was the current chair of the University Advancement
Committee and vice chair of the Committee on Trustees.
I remember with absolute clarity the
day, over lunch, when I told her the Board wanted her to become a
member. She was deeply moved and grateful, but it was also clear that
she knew from the start that she would become a truly excellent trustee,
and she did. Everything she touched during her trusteeship got better
for her involvement. She did things right, and she did the right things.
She was smart, deeply insightful, sensitive, strong, courageous—a
wonderful friend to me, Ann and her entire trustee family.
Ann and I have extended our heartfelt
sympathy and prayers to Sabra’s family, which includes her husband,
Claus, her mother, Sabra Briggs Johnson, her sister, Ann, and her
brothers Peter, Tom and Bill and their families, and her many friends.
When we learn about memorial arrangements, we’ll send that information
to you.
