In Memoriam: C. Edwin "Eddie" Brackett M'70
We have lost a retired member of the
administrative staff whose contributions to St. Lawrence are remembered
with great respect and whose personal energies and commitment to the Canton
community are legendary.
C. Edwin "Eddie" Brackett died Sunday, March 5, at United Helpers Nursing Home in
Canton. He was 83.
Eddie Brackett joined the staff in 1962 as assistant to the comptroller; he retired
in 1986 as assistant to the vice president for business affairs/director of budgets.
Prior to joining the St. Lawrence staff, he worked for 15 years at Kraft Foods in Canton,
seven years as manager of the local plant. During his 24 years of service, he helped
design St. Lawrence's computerized financial system. When he retired, Eddie's
responsibilities were so broad that the University hired three staff members to
fulfill all he did. Not only were his competence and productivity well respected,
Eddie also was known as one of the most gracious members of the staff. He also
claimed alumni status, earning his master's degree from St. Lawrence in 1970.
A devoted Rotarian, Eddie poured inexhaustible energy into many community service
activities to benefit Canton and the North Country. He was named Rotarian of the
year for 1979-1980, and was one of the organization's past presidents and most
active members until the very last years, when he moved back to his native
Georgia, better to enjoy his passion for deep-sea fishing. Among Eddie's other
commitments in Canton were the presidency of the St. Lawrence County unit of the
American Cancer Society, clerk of the Canton Board of Education, an official of the
First Baptist Church in Canton, an officer of the University Inn Corporation, and
director of the St. Lawrence County United Fund.
Eddie's wife Marion died in 1998; Ann and I have extended the condolences of the
Laurentian community to their sons Mark and Andy and daughter Kathleen
Entrup, and we offer our sympathies to the many friends and colleagues
who remember him so fondly. His family has made arrangements through Lawrence
Funeral Home to have visitation hours Friday, March 10, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., and a memorial service on Saturday, March 11, at
9:30 a.m., in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. His family hopes that memorial
expressions might be made to St. Lawrence University, c/o Development
Office, Vilas 213.
