Opportunities for Students

As you plan your educational program at St. Lawrence, there are several opportunities you should keep in mind, some specific to philosophy majors, others open to all St. Lawrence Students.

For Philosophy Majors

Exceptional philosophy majors can receive honors in philosophy if they meet the requirements.  To graduate with honors, a student must complete a philosophy major and have a 3.5 grade point average in philosophy, and the student must complete a departmentally approved honors project (researching a thesis topic in the Fall of senior year by enrolling in Phil 498, and completing and defending an honors thesis in the Spring of senior year, enrolling in Phil 499).

Every year, the Kathryn Fraser Mackay Award is given to a graduating senior.  This award was established in 2002 by Donald Mackay P'77 in tribute to Kathy's engaging and generous spirit, and is awarded to an outstanding senior philosophy major on Moving Up Day.  While academic accomplishments are considered, other factors are taken into account as well.  For example, the philosophy department very much appreciates those students who contribute to fostering a sense of community among philosophy students.

For Other Philosophy Students as Well as Majors and Minors

The philosophy honorary society, Phi Sigma Tau, is not limited to philosophy majors and minors but is open to all students who meet the requirements.  There is a separate web page that details these requirements.

For All St. Lawrence Students

There are many fellowship and scholarship opportunities available to St. Lawrence students.  The career services webpage has some helpful listings.  It is a good idea to examine these opportunities early in your time at St. Lawrence so that you can know what is available and plan accordingly.  These opportunities provide excellent ways to enrich your educational experience.

Another way to enrich your educational experience is to study in an off-campus program.  St. Lawrence's Center for International and Intercultural Studies offers helpful information.  Again, it is a good idea to review this information early in your time at St. Lawrence so that you can plan carefully.
