Manuel Chavez-Jimenez, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, has a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Truman State University, and an M.A. in Philosophy (Philosophy, Interpretation, and Culture Program) from the State University of New York at Binghamton. His teaching and research interests include Latin American Philosophy, postcolonial philosophy, multiculturalism, philosophies of praxis, and U.S. Latina/o Theory. As a Ph.D. candidate in the P.I.C. Program at SUNY-Binghamton, he is currently completing his dissertation, which examines philosophies of praxis within the context of Chicana/o Theory.
Baylor Johnson, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, and Director of the Outdoor Studies Program, has a B.S. in History from the University of Tennessee, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Philosophy from Northwestern University. His special interests include social and ethical philosophy in relation to environmental problems and solutions, and also free will and responsibility. He teaches seminars on both these topics as well as courses in Symbolic Logic, elementary Reasoning, and Introduction to Philosophy. He is a lifelong backpacker, a rock-climber and mountaineer, and helped to create the University's Outdoor Program and Outdoor Studies Minor. He has been Director of the Outdoor Studies Program since the 2004-2005 academic year.
Dean Lauer, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, has a B.A. in Literature from Ohio University, an M.A. in Philosophy from Cleveland State University, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Ottawa. His teaching and research interests include environmental philosophy, continental philosophy (including phenomenology, eco-phenomenology, and Heidegger studies), and logic. He was a Fulbright scholar in Norway in 2002-03. At St. Lawrence, he will be teaching Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophy of the Environment.
Erin McCarthy, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, has a B.A. in Philosophy from Trent University and a Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa. Her teaching and research interests include comparative philosophy, philosophies of the body, personal identity and ethics. Her doctoral work compared European phenomenology, particularly Heidegger and Husserl, with the work of contemporary Japanese philosopher Watsuji Tetsuro. Currently, she is working on comparative views of the body and cross cultural ethics. She teaches Introduction to Philosophy: A Comparative Approach, Asian Philosophy, and Comparative Existentialism.
Laura Rediehs,
Associate Professor
and Chair of the Department of Philosophy, has a B.A. in Philosophy and
Religion from Earlham College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy
from the University of Minnesota. She is interested in the history
of philosophy of science, and in questions concerning scientific realism
(e.g., how is theoretical knowledge in science possible?) Her research
interests also include the problem of incommensurability of paradigms,
both as a problem studied within the philosophy of science, and as a problem
addressed by theories of non-violent conflict resolution. She teaches
courses in Philosophy of Science, and also Theories of Knowledge and Reality,
Limits
of Knowledge, and peace studies courses.
