Here at St. Lawrence University, there are many majors that a Laurentian can choose to explore. Being a Liberal Arts school, St. Lawrence covers a vast range of professions and areas of interest for students to study. But the Performance and Communication Arts department is one that has caught my eye since my second semester on campus. When I as applying to SLU, I was planning on majoring in Business. I was going to be one of the first students at St. Lawrence to graduate with the new degree in Business and I was going to start my own business after graduation. But, after I took my first Economics class, I found out that the Business track was not for me. I then turned to Sociology and Psychology. I thought that I wanted to be a Guidance Counselor in schools because I wanted to help children as my Guidance Counselor had helped me. I then realized that placement rates after graduation were not exactly where I wanted them to be so I turned to the major that my greatest role models had majored in; Communication Studies. I was kicking myself for not seeing this connection sooner but I refocused and got into two PCA classes in the fall semester of my second year here at school and I loved them both. I finally felt comfortable in the area that I was studying. I felt like I belonged in the department and I was relatively successful in the specialty.
After several visits and workshop sessions with the Career Services Office, I have developed a plan of action for the next two and a half years of my educational career. If I follow this plan, I should be able to land a job within a reasonable time after graduation, in the field that I study. This is obviously one of the most important parts of going to college in today’s world. The job fields that I can be a part of after graduation, if I major in Communication Studies, are fields that I can certainly see myself in. The field that I am most interested in is the field of development. Development is an area that, believe it or not, I have had some experience in. With that experience, I have learned that I enjoy working in development and fund raising. The goals that are set and the process by which you reach the goals are very concrete, and I like that about the profession. Aside from development, a degree in Communication Studies can also help me land other jobs in fields that interest me; fields that require people in management or administrative roles. With such a degree, from such a university, I will be able to go into so many different career fields that I am interested and that I will be able to support myself after graduation.
I want to be accepted into this program because I feel as though I have what it takes to major in Performance and Communication Arts at St. Lawrence University and I believe that I will serve as a successful alumni of the program after graduation. I am excited to be able to call myself a PCA major and I look forward to taking more and more courses with the professors here at SLU. This major is a perfect fit for me and I believe that it will make my college experience even better than it already is. Thank you so much for your consideration and I home to hear back from you soon.
