Matt McCluskey has been serving as St. Lawrence’s Coordinator of Academic Engagement since 2018 and is in his 16th year working at his alma mater.  Matt sees his position as a wonderful opportunity to advise, mentor, and teach students, to lead our peer tutors, and to help students--- especially sophomores---develop momentum in their academic and co-curricular endeavors.   In this work, he hopes to connect students with engaged learning opportunities, teach proactive academic strategies, and help students imagine, develop, and implement a positive vision for their time here.  His activities include participation in campus-wide retention efforts and collaboration across many different programs, most especially Athletics, the Sophomore Success Initiative, and the Campus Kitchens Project.   He helps many students working through the process of academic recovery and embraces the regular opportunity to teach in St. Lawrence’s classrooms. Matt's teaching interests include political theory, land use policy, youth sports, and student engagement.

Matt served in such varied roles as reading tutor, legislative aide, public policy researcher, electoral campaign volunteer, high school soccer coach, and history teacher over a nine year period before returning to Canton. He also earned a master's degree in political science from Duke University.  When he’s not at work, Matt likes gardening, kayaking, cross-country skiing,  hanging out with his cats Lovebug and Eclipse, and crunching the numbers for his son's baseball teams.
