Whitewater World (Principles of Paddling)

To begin with, you will develop paddling skills that give you access to the wonders of flowingrivers all over the Earth . . . beginning here in Canton, New York and extending to the far reaches of globe.
Along the way, you will encounter law, philosophy, physics, activism, geology, psychology, medicine, multiculturalism, technology, ecosystems, sociology, globalization, regional history, art, and politics.
This is a non-credit, half-semester course beginning at the start of the term and culminating with a four-day paddling circuit over midsemester break in October. We will meet one afternoon per week (day and time to be arranged) and every other Saturday.
The course is exclusively field-based. Learning will take place both on the river and off; there are no papers or exams. Recommended readings are not mandatory but will enhance the scope of the participant's experience and broaden the course's content.
Whitewater World: Principles of Paddling is a course geared for people who have basic whitewater skills and understanding, acquired through one of the Outdoor Program;s instructional progressions or from some other personal experience. Two months on the water and a healthy dose of determination will make you a competent, intermediate-level paddler - guaranteed.

Dates:
Fall Semester: start of term- mid Semester Break (see Master Calendar)
Spring Semester: after Spring Break- end of term (see Master Calendar)
