Winter Break in El Portrero Chico, Mexico
What do winter break, excellent climbing routes on steep limestone, and Northern Mexico have in common? They all come together in this year's winter climbing trip to El Porterero Chico. El Portrero Chico is a limestone formation that rises 2500 feet off the desert floor just outside of the town of Higalo, north of Monterrey. El Portrero Chico is famous in climbing circles for its long (up to ten inches) sport routes, fun limestone sport cragging and relaxed and fun atmosphere. New Years is a fantastic time to experience El Portrero. The sport climbing at El Portrero is intermediate to advanced. There are many singles pitch routes, 2 to 3-pitch routes, and longer alpine-style sport routes. Courses taught on this trip will include climbing technique movement, sport following and leading, and multipitch climbing.
