Outdoor Rock Climbing Progression

Come out and enjoy the quality Eastern granite in your backyard. The following courses are for those people who have never touched rock before to those who have experience and want to expand their technical skills and/or just climb. Courses will be run out of the Adirondacks, the Gatineaus (Quebec) and the Shawangunks with the possibility of a trip going out to Rumney, New Hampshire. Weekend progression courses include: Introduction to Rock Climbing, Natural Anchors and Rappel Techniques, Gear Placement and Artificial Anchors, Lead Theory, and Multipitching.

Introduction to Rock Climbing
Head out to the Adirondacks! This course will include basic rock movement (face and crack technique), knots, communication, and belaying. Emphasis is on spending as much time as we can on the rock, climbing.

Natural Anchors and Rappel Techniques
Looking for some skills to climb on your own? This course will cover all the necessities of setting up top rope anchors with natural protection. The Adirondacks and the Gatineaus offer incredible playgrounds for easy access top rope set ups off trees and boulders. This will also include rappel techniques using an ATC, Munter and carabiner brake, along with friction hitches (i.e. Prussic, kleimheist etc), to better manage your rappel. Participants will set up their own top ropes, practice rappelling and of course…climb!

Gear Placement, Artificial Anchors, Lead Theory
Ready for the next step? Come learn about the proper usage and placement of artificial protection and advanced anchor building. Learn the difference between active and passive protection, spend time placing gear and learning how to connect it to make anchors. Depending on student experience, lead theory will also be covered followed by an opportunity to practice mock leads with feedback on your placements.

Multipitch Climbing
Get high. This course will take place in the Shawangunks of Southern New York. Learn the rope management and differing belay methods involved in climbing several pitches with three people. Watch the birds fly… below you, take in the views and get some awesome climbing in on Gunks classics.

Learning to Lead (NEW!!)
This course is designed to instruct competent climbers who are ready to step into the world of leading, and those who are ready to transition from sport to traditional leading. We will practice protection placement, artificial anchor construction, mock leads and will talk about lead theory and mental aspects of leading. This course will span two local weekday sessions and two weekends in the Adirondacks.
