INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERT OFFERED AT SLU

CANTON - A concert of Indian classical music, with Ken
Zuckerman on sarod, will be held at St. Lawrence University
on Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall,
Griffiths Arts Center. It is open to the public, free of
charge.
Zuckerman is internationally acclaimed as one of the
finest sarod virtuosos performing today. He has completed 24
years of training under the rigorous discipline of Ustad
Ali Akbar Khan and has performed with Maestro Khan in numerous
concerts in Europe, India and the United States. In addition
to an extensive performance schedule, Zuckerman directs the
Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel, Switzerland, and is
also a teacher at the Music Academy of Basel, where he
conducts courses in both North Indian classical music and
the music of the Middle Ages.
The sarod has 25 metal strings, 10 of which are
played with a "plectrum," made from a coconut shell. Four
strings carry the melody; three are tuned to the tonic and
serve to accentuate the rhythm; and three others are tuned
to the dominant notes of the chosen raga. The remaining 15
are "sympathetic" strings, which resonate when the
corresponding notes on the main strings are played. A metal
gourd increases the resonance as well as helping to keep the
proper balance of the instrument.
