SLU PROFESSOR & STUDENTS WIN GRANT FOR ZEN STUDY IN JAPAN

CANTON -- A St. Lawrence University professor and four of her
students will spend three weeks studying Zen Buddhism in Japan this
summer, assisted by a Freeman Student-Faculty Fellowship from ASIANetwork.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Erin A. McCarthy
and students Marcus Perman, Washington, Maine; Nicole Gagnon, Buxton,
Maine; Bethany Taylor, Hopkinton, New Hampshire; and Courtney Williams,
Bristol, Vermont, will study in Japan May 17 through June 7. They will
explore nature, practice, methods of teaching and the role of women in
Zen life in Japan.
While in Japan, the students will meet with Zen masters and
scholars and visit Zen temples, museums and tea houses. They will visit
the two Japanese institutions where St. Lawrence has programs of study,
International Christian University and the Nanzan Institute for Religion
and Culture.
The students will write papers on their research, as well as
collaborate on a group journal, with a goal of publishing their work
in an academic journal. They also plan to create a web site when they
return, to share the results of their academic study with the community,
and give public presentations.
ASIANetwork is a consortium of over 150 North American colleges
striving to strengthen the role of Asian studies within the framework of
liberal arts education to help prepare a new generation of undergraduates
for a world in which Asian societies will play more and more prominent
roles. The Freeman Student-Faculty Fellows Program funds teams of students
working with faculty mentors to do scholarly research on-site in Asia.
