DON MCPHERSON TO TALK GENDER & SPORTS AT SLU
CANTON - Former Syracuse University and professional football player Don McPherson will
give an interactive presentation called "You Throw Like A Girl" on Tuesday, November 14,
at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theater at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public,
free of charge.
In the presentation, McPherson discusses society's construction of a violent
masculinity and solutions for challenging it. Through his interactive dialogue,
McPherson explores the connections between masculinity, alcohol and sexual violence,
encouraging men to take the forefront in the fight to end violence against women.
McPherson is the founder and executive director of the Sports Leadership Institute at
Adelphi University. He actively promotes the use of sports as an educational tool and
works with community organizations to create innovative programs for high school and
college students to address issues of self-esteem, substance abuse and violence prevention.
A sought-after speaker and presenter, he has advised numerous national organizations,
including the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the U.S. Departments of
Justice and Education and the Family Violence Prevention Fund.
