SLU Increases Slots Available Through Yellow Ribbon Program
CANTON - St. Lawrence University has increased by half the number of slots available through its participation in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. The program allows institutions of higher learning (degree-granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Institutions can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses, and the VA will match the same amount as the institution.
The 2010-2011 academic year is the second in which St. Lawrence has participated. In the first year, 10 slots were made available through the program and this year, 15 are available. At present, eight students benefit.
Those eligible for the program include dependents of veterans who meet criteria determined by the VA.
At St. Lawrence, qualifying undergraduate students are eligible for $2,500 per student, per year from the University, matched equally by the VA.
