SLU WRITERS SERIES FIRST TALK SEPT. 7

CANTON -- Essayist John D'Agata is the first artist in the
2000-2001 St. Lawrence University Writers Series. He will
speak and read from his work on Thursday, September 7, at
7 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall. The event is open to the public,
free of charge.
D'Agata's forthcoming debut collection, Halls of Fame
(Graywolf, 2001), combines "a maximalist's intellectual curiosity
with a minimalist's austere lyricism to produce results that
are novel, intriguing and haunting." He shifts between prose
and poetic strategies throughout the book, creating an innovative
hybrid D'Agata calls "the lyric essay."
The editor of The Next American Essay, an anthology of
lyric essays by other contemporary writers, D'Agata is the associate
editor of Hobart and William Smith College's Seneca Review and a
visiting assistant professor of English at Colgate University.
D'Agata's reading will be preceded by readings from the
winners of St. Lawrence's Young Writers Contest: Nicole Bogas, of
Charlotte, North Carolina, poetry; Charlotte Hardin, of Magnolia,
Texas, creative non-fiction; and Geeta Naidu, of South Barrington,
Illinois, fiction.
Other Writers Series events this year include Carolyne
Wright, October 4; Colin Harrison and Kathryn Harrison, October 25;
Alberto Rios, November 1; David Shields, November 8; Robin Hemley,
February 6; Paul Muldoon, March 7; and Chase Twichell, April 18.
