SLU CELEBRATES WORLD LANGUAGES WEEK
CANTON - Film screenings, language workshops, cooking demonstrations and dance
lessons are a few of the activities and events that will mark the celebration of
World Languages Week at St. Lawrence University, March 4 through 10.
International flags will be on display in the Student Center and in Dana Dining
Center to celebrate the different countries represented on campus. In addition,
signs on office doors will demonstrate the variety of languages spoken on campus,
with over 100 faculty and staff members speaking a second language; Owen D. Young
Library will highlight international periodicals; and Dana Dining Center will
serve international fare each night of the week, at a cost of $9 per person.
Dinner is served from 5 to 8 pm and is open to the public.
Other events, all free and open to the public, include the following:
Sunday, March 4: The Spanish film Volver, with commentary by Visiting Assistant
Professor of Spanish Jenna Torres, will be shown at 7 p.m. in Carnegie 10.
Monday, March 5: The Language Resource Center will have an information table on
the first floor of the Student Center from noon to 4 p.m. Jeffrey Campbell
Graduate Fellow Wannie Wang will present a workshop on Asian character-writing
from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Carnegie 207. The German film The Edukators will be
shown at 7 p.m. in Hepburn Auditorium, room 218.
Tuesday, March 6: The Native American Student Organization will present a
workshop on the Mohawk, S'Klallam and Cayuga languages from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in
the Student Center, room 336. The French film Caché, with commentary by Associate
Professor of French Roy Caldwell, will be shown in Hepburn Auditorium, room 218,
at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, March 7: An international coffee and tea hour will take place at
4 p.m., followed by Poetry for Peace at 4:30 p.m. in the Winston Room of the Student
Center. The Swahili film From Sun up (Kumekucha) will be shown in Carnegie 10 with
commentary and discussion led by Associate Professor of Anthropology Celia Nyamweru.
Thursday, March 8: A Chinese dumpling cooking demonstration will take place from 3
to 4 p.m. in the International House kitchen, in Sykes Residence Hall. The German
film Good-Bye Lenin will be shown in Carnegie 10 at 7 p.m with commentary by Visiting
Instructor of Government Michael Popovic.
Friday, March 9: There will be a tortilla Española cooking demonstration from 4 to
5 p.m. in the International House kitchen, Sykes Residence Hall. Latin dance lessons
will begin at 8 p.m., followed by local band Piquant, from 10 to 11 p.m. in the
International House lounge, Sykes Residence Hall.
Saturday, March 10: The Japanese film Rhapsody in August will be shown at 7 p.m.
in Carnegie 10.
