WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN TOPIC OF SLU TALK

CANTON -- "Women, Islam and the Taliban: The Social and 
Political Construction of Gender in Afghanistan" is the 
topic of a talk to be given by Robert Nichols, history professor 
at the University of Pennsylvania, at St. Lawrence University on 
Thursday, March 2, at 4:30 p.m. in the Hepburn Auditorium.
	In his talk, Nichols will address the treatment of women 
in Afghanistan in the historical context of Islam, Afghanistan 
and Asia in general. He will also discuss the United States' 
involvement in the politics of Afghanistan after the fall of the 
Communist government, and present possible strategies for people 
who wish to promote civil, human and women's rights in Afghanistan.
