NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING PHYSICIST TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - William D. Phillips, winner of the Nobel Prize in physics in 1997, will give three public presentations at St. Lawrence University, as part of the celebration of the World Year of Physics.

Phillips will deliver the 2005 Niles Lecture on Science and Religion on Wednesday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall. Phillips states that the talk, titled "Ordinary Faith, Ordinary Science," will explore "the nature of my beliefs, and the relationship between my science and my faith. While, for me, science and religion differ in many respects (verifiability and falsifiability of claims), they also have common features (conclusions based on received knowledge, experience and reason). I believe in God both as the source of all the wonderful features of the universe and as a personal, interacting friend."

On Thursday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Bloomer Auditorium, Brown Hall, Phillips will give a lecture titled Time, Einstein, and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe." This multi-media presentation is suitable for audiences of all ages, and will include, Phillips says, "live demonstrations and down-to-earth explanations about physics that are literally out of this world."

Also on November 3, at 4 p.m., he will present a colloquium, titled "A Bose Condensate in an Optical Lattice: Cold Atoms meet Solid State." That event is in Room 205-206 of Valentine Hall on the St. Lawrence campus.

Phillips is a scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1997 with two other scientists, for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.
