WILDERNESS COURSES OFFERED AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - A wilderness first aid and wilderness first-responder course 
will be offered at St. Lawrence University through the Outdoor Education 
Program.
        Both are certified by the Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities 
(SOLO)  program, an organization that specializes in wildnerness emergency 
medicine education, and feature SOLO-certified instructors.
        The Wilderness First Aid course will be April 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. 
to 5 p.m. both days, with a fee of $125. The 16-hour course will introduce 
trip leaders and outdoor enthusiasts to the practice of first aid and long-term 
patient care. In addition, the course may be used for recertification of those 
with wilderness first-responder certification. A $50 deposit is required by 
March 29, with the remainder due the day of the first class.
        The Wilderness First-Responder course will be held May 24 through 
June 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with a fee of $430. The 80-hour certification 
course is created to provide outdoor leaders, guides, rangers and counselors with 
the knowledge to deal with crises in remote settings. It meets all Department of 
Transportation national standards for first-responders, with additional protocols 
for extended-care situations. A deposit of $100 is required by April 15.
