UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST MINISTER TO SPEAK AT SLU
CANTON - The Reverend David Weissbard, founder of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at
the Chautauqua Institute and of the Chautauqua Society for Peace and Justice, will give a
talk titled "Ethics Without A Deity" on Monday, October 24, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole at
St. Lawrence University. The event, part of the University's Sesquicentennial celebration,
is open to the public, free of charge.
Weissbard, a 1962 graduate of St. Lawrence, is a native of Albany, New York, and
senior minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockford, Illinois. He earned
his Master of Divinity degree and certification in religious education from the
former theological school at St. Lawrence, in 1965. After serving at churches in
Dexter and Henderson, New York; Bedford, Massachusetts; and Fairfax, Virginia, he
became the senior minister in Rockford, beginning in 1979.
Weissbard has been the producer of "Fusion," a weekly half-hour television program on
WIFR in Rockford for 25 years. He has served on the Rockford Schools Religion Policy
Committee and is president of the Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union. Weissbard has served as vice president of the Central Midwest
District of the Unitarian Universalist Association, and as secretary of the Central
Midwest District chapter of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers' Association.
He received awards from the Unitarian Universalist Association for the outstanding
sermon on Stewardship in 1999 and on Religious Education in 2000.
