SLU CELEBRATES PROF'S BOOK ABOUT NORTH COUNTRY WOMAN

CANTON - The Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries at
St. Lawrence University invite the community to join in honoring
Professor of English Susan E. Ward on the publication of her book
Dear Home: The 1901 and 1902 Diary of Mabel Lila Wait.
A reception will be held on Friday, February 26, at 4 p.m. in
the Josephine Young Room of Owen D. Young Library; Ward will speak
about the book and refreshments will be served.
Dear Home, edited and with an introduction by Ward, records the
struggles of a turn-of-the-century Canton woman who saved the family
farm after the death of her parents. Wait ran the farm herself, over
the protests of male relatives, until her eventual marriage. As well
as recounting the story of a courageous woman, the book offers glimpses
of both town and rural life in St. Lawrence County in the early 20th
century.
A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1975, Ward is a graduate
of Carnegie-Mellon University, with a master's degree and Ph.D. from the
University of Connecticut. She has studied a number of women's diaries
from the 19th and early 20th centuries in Northern New York, and has given
presentations on the topic to groups through the area.
