PHOTOGRAPHS BY VIGGO MORTENSEN TO BE EXHIBITED IN SLU GALLERY



CANTON - Signlanguage: Photographs by Viggo Mortensen will be 

exhibited in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence 

University February 27 though April 5. A variety of other events, 

including a film series, poetry reading by the artist and a 

book-signing, will also be held on campus, in conjunction with 

the exhibition.

	Mortensen is a star of the current hit film The Lord 

Of The Rings: The Two Towers, and a 1980 graduate of St. Lawrence 

University. He is an accomplished painter, photographer and poet 

in addition to having a successful career as a film actor. Author 

of two poetry books, Ten Last Night and Don't Tell Me What To 

Do, Mortensen also published Recent Forgeries, a book of art 

and poetry with an accompanying compact disc of poetry and 

music, documenting his first exhibition, in 1999. Three books 

of his photographs have been published, Coincidence of Memory, 

Hole in the Sun and Signlanguage.

	Among his many films are The Lord Of The Rings, 

Part I: The Fellowship Of The Ring, G.I. Jane, Crimson Tide, 

A Perfect Murder and Witness.

	Events being held in conjunction with the exhibition 

are as follows; free tickets, available at the E.J. Noble 

University Center main desk, are required for each.

	Friday, February 28

        - Opening reception for the exhibition Signlanguage: 

Photographs by Viggo Mortensen, 7:30-8:30 p.m. and 9-10 p.m., 

Richard F. Brush Art Gallery.

	Saturday, March 1

        - Poetry reading, 2:30 p.m., Gulick Theatre

        - Book signing, 3-7 p.m., Brush Gallery

        - Screening of the extended version of The Lord Of 

The Rings, Part I: The Fellowship Of The Ring, Gulick 

Theatre, 7:30-11 p.m., and The Underground (E.J. Noble 

University Center), 7:45-11:15 p.m.; each with introductory 

remarks by Mortensen.

	In addition, a series of Mortensen's films will 

be shown throughout the week preceding the opening of the 

exhibition, all at 7 p.m. in The Underground, E.J. Noble 

University Center; admission is open to the public, free 

of charge. Tickets are not required for these screenings.

The film series includes:

	- Monday, February 24, Indian Runner

	- Tuesday, February 25, Carlito's Way

	- Wednesday, February 26, Portrait of a Lady

	- Thursday, February 27, A Walk on the Moon

	The Brush Gallery is open Monday-Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. 

and Friday-Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information
