The program will include works by Fontana, Frescobaldi, Corelli and Sarti; of special interest are works by two women composers, Anna Bon and Isabella Leonarda. On Sunday, February 23, at 4 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall, Schenkman will perform a solo recital of virtuoso works for harpsichord. The program will include works composed by Scarlatti, Bach and Handel. Both events are open to the public, free of charge. Matthews is the music director of Seattle Baroque, and one of today's most respected exponents of her instrument. She won first prize in the Erwin Bodky International Competition for Early Music in 1989, and performed extensively with numerous leading period-instrument ensembles before founding Seattle Baroque in 1994, with Schenkman. In addition, she serves as concertmaster for the New York Collegium, and has held the same position for the prestigious Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. Matthews has served on the faculties of the University of Toronto, the University of Washington, Indiana University and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Schenkman is artistic director of Seattle Baroque and performs internationally as a recitalist, concerto soloist and in concerts with Matthews. His intense and commanding live performances have inspired comparison with musicians as diverse as Vladimir Horowitz and Jimi Hendrix, and he was described in the Boston Globe as "a superb and imaginative instrumentalist." Recent CD releases include Bach Harpsichord Concertos with Seattle Baroque, and solo sonatas from the "Essercizi," by Domenico Scarlatti.
